چکیده

This study examines how reference to spatial boundaries can make speakers of English represent or understand a motion event as temporally bounded. Spatial boundaries can be implied by (a) the path expressed by a directional item, (b) the so-called ―landmark‖ (Langacker, 1987) serving as ̳support‘ for the path, and (c) the moving entity. Importantly, one and the same entity in the real world can also be conceptualized as either primarily delimited (bounded) or extended (nonbounded). After setting the stage with an example (section 1) and dealing with some important terminological preliminaries (section 2), we take a closer look at the concept of boundaries (section 3). We then set up a four-way classification of directional prepositions in English (section 4), based on whether they refer to a path that is extended and, if so, on whether that path is specified or not for having or lacking an end-

Investigating the Use of Games and Flash Cards in Teaching Spatial and Temporal Prepositions to Iranian Pre-Intermediate EFL Learners

One of the most problematic areas for teachers and learners in English classrooms is prepositions. Two types of prepositions in English are spatial (space) and temporal (time) prepositions. Prepositions are words linking two entities and thereby specifying the relation of the two. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the role of games and flash cards in learning place and time prep...

A Novel Temporal-Frequency Domain Error Concealment Method for Motion Jpeg

Motion-JPEG is a common video format for compression of motion images with highquality using JPEG standard for each frame of the video. During transmission through a noisychannel some blocks of data are lost or corrupted, and the quality of decompression frames decreased. In this paper, for reconstruction of these blocks, several temporal-domain, spatial-domain, andfrequency-domain error conceal...

Assessment of Spatial and Temporal Variability of Extreme Precipitation Indices (North and West of Iran)

The frequency of precipitation extreme event can cause flood or change the drought period. Accurate understanding of these changes is necessary to take action to reduce these effects. In this research, temporal and spatial changes of 14 precipitation indices for eight synoptic stations in the North and West of the country were investigated. For this purpose, after reconstructing the daily preci...

Robot Motion Vision Pait I: Theory

A direct method called fixation is introduced for solving the general motion vision problem, arbitrary motion relative to an arbitrary environment. This method results in a linear constraint equation which explicitly expresses the rotational velocity in terms of the translational velocity. The combination of this constraint equation with the Brightness-Change Constraint Equation solves the gene...

Learning to express motion events in English and Korean: the influence of language-specific lexicalization patterns.

English and Korean differ in how they lexicalize the components of motion events. English characteristically conflates Motion with Manner, Cause, or Deixis, and expresses Path separately. Korean, in contrast, conflates Motion with Path and elements of Figure and Ground in transitive clauses for caused Motion, but conflates motion with Deixis and spells out Path and Manner separately in intransi...
